We test numerous leathers from around the world before selecting the finest hides for the leather sole. Only the densest, most consistent pieces meet our standards. Sole leather is made from thick, durable bovine hides that undergo a long, slow vegetable tanning process, using oak bark. This traditional method strengthens the fibres, enhances flexibility and produces one of the hardest, most resistant leathers available. It’s a process that takes months rather than weeks, resulting in a material built for the demanding life of shoe and boot soles. We always order matching heels using the same tannery for consistency and offer dovetail and half rubber leather heels. Once shaped and attached, we sand, wax, and burnish each sole by hand, giving it a rich, polished finish that develops character over time. Our Method
- To start, we remove the worn sole by carefully unpicking the welt stitch in order to preserve the original welt.
- Secondly, we re-cork if needed using a spreadable cork.
- We then rough up the back of the House Leather Full Sole Sole to give good adhesion.
- We glue the new sole to the bottom of the shoe and trim.
- Carefully, we welt-stitch through the same holes to ensure the durability of the welt.
- Finally, we hand-trim and finish the edges to match the shoe’s original profile.
