Leather randing is a subtle detail that transforms a standard repair into a premium finish. It strengthens the shoe, improves durability, and restores its original profile. At Baxter & Black, we use traditional leather randing on selected repairs before securing everything with Blake stitching for a clean, refined result.

A leather rand sits between the upper and the sole. It reinforces the edge, protects the upper from scuffs, and creates a smooth transition between the upper and sole. More than a cosmetic detail, it adds strength, structure, and longevity.

We hand-shape every leather rand to match the shoe before securing it with our Blake stitching machine. Blake stitching passes through the insole, upper, and sole to create a slim, flexible construction. It suits many Italian dress shoes, loafers, and lightweight boots. This method preserves the shoe’s elegant profile while delivering a durable repair.

We select premium leather and match it as closely as possible to the original colour and finish. We then trim, dye, and polish the edges by hand so the repair blends seamlessly with the existing sole. The result looks original, not repaired.

Our Method

  1. We carefully remove the worn sole and prepare the shoe for repair.
  2. The sole is cleaned, trimmed, and any old adhesive is removed.
  3. Next, we fit and glue premium leather randing to match the shoe perfectly.
  4. The rand is secured using traditional Blake stitching for a strong, flexible finish.
  5. We add a leather or resin midsole suited to the shoe.
  6. Finally, we trim, dye, and polish the edges so the repair blends seamlessly with the original shoe.
